    A two-year study of the composition and abundance of the zooplankton was conducted in an Amazonian vãrzea lake, Lago Camaleão. Rotifers were dominant in terms of both species numbers and density. The extremely low standing-stock observed during the high water period is attributed to prevailing poor oxygen conditions and, during extreme floods, current. The species associations of rotifers also reflect the flooding regime and its consequences

    Various factors affecting the frequency stability of hydrogen masers are described and related to maser design parameters. The long-term frequency stability of a hydrogen maser is limited by the mechanical stability of the cavity, and the magnitudes of the wall relaxation, spin exchange, and recombination rates which affect the Q of the line. Magnetic resonance studies of hydrogen atoms at temperatures below 1 K and in containers coated with liquid helium films demonstrated that cryogenic masers may allow substantial improvements in all of these parameters. In particular the thermal expansion coefficients of most materials are negligible at 1 K. Spin exchange broadening is three orders of magnitude smaller at 1 K than at room temperature, and the recombination and wall relaxation rates are negligible at 0.52 K where the frequency shift due to the 4 He-coated walls of the container has a broad minimum as a function of temperature. Other advantages of the helium-cooled maser result from the high purity, homogeneity, and resilence of helium-film-coated walls and the natural compatibility of the apparatus with helium-cooled amplifiers

    A summary of joint US-Canadian augmentor wing powered-lift STOL research programs at the Ames Research Center, NASA, 1975-1980

    Several different flight research programs carried out by NASA and the Canadian Government using the Augmentor Wing Jet STOL Research Aircraft to investigate the design, operational, and systems requirements for powered-lift STOL aircraft are summarized. Some of these programs considered handling qualities and certification criteria for this class of aircraft, and addressed pilot control techniques, control system design, and improved cockpit displays for the powered-lift STOL approach configuration. Other programs involved exploiting the potential of STOL aircraft for constrained terminal-area approaches within the context of present or future air traffic control environments. Both manual and automatic flight control investigations are discussed, and an extensive bibliography of the flight programs is included

    Flight experience with advanced controls and displays during piloted curved decelerating approaches in a powered-lift STOL aircraft

    The control, display, and procedural features are described for a flight experiment conducted to assess the feasibility of piloted STOL approaches along predefined, steep, curved, and decelerating approach profiles. It was found to be particularly important to assist the pilot through use of the flight director computing capability with the lower frequency control-related tasks, such as those associated with monitoring and adjusting configuration trim as influenced by atmospheric effects, and preventing the system from exceeding powerplant and SAS authority limitations. Many of the technical and pilot related issues identified in the course of this flight investigation are representative of similarly demanding operational tasks that are thought to be possible only through the use of sophisticated control and display systems

    Ambiguity in the Determination of the Free Energy for a Model of the Circle Map

    We consider a simple model to describe the widths of the mode locked intervals for the critical circle map. Using two different partitions of the rational numbers, based on Farey series and Farey tree levels respectively, we calculate the free energy analytically at selected points for each partition. It is found that the result of the calculation depends on the method of partition. An implication of this is that the generalized dimensions DqD_q are different for each partition except when q=0q=0, i.e. only the Hausdorff dimension is the same in each case.Comment: 14 page
